PYP 8 News

Week of 10th April, 2017

Dear Parents,

There are many wonderful actions happening all over the school and outside in the wider community. We have children thinking about how to improve recess, encouraging others to eat healthy and think about the impact of their online presence.

Other groups are reaching out into the community to help NGOs and crèches to help other children who are in need improve their lives, even if it's only in a small way. All of our students are learning the importance of giving back to community.

We are also fine-tuning our presentations including a display board and a formal presentation which will be supported by a powerpoint. On top of this students are creating art installations that express their topics in an artistic and emotional way.

The more organized students are this week, the less they will have to do over the holidays, but expect that there will be some work being done over the holiday. This is all part of the personal responsibility we are coming to expect from PYP 8 during the exhibition, to know what they need to do and get it done. We are at least expecting students to work on their reflection draft of the exhibition process over the holiday.

It will all be over soon, we will be celebrating the process and all the hard work we have done. Please help us to encourage your child to push through and finish strong. The exhibition has certainly been a marathon. We can see the finish line fast approaching, but we are not there yet.

Upcoming things to remember….

  • April 13th - half day for students (no lunch provided)
  • April 14th to 21st - No School. Half term break.
  • Fri. 28th April- Parents workshop and Bake Sale
  • Exhibition Week - May 2nd - 5th (information will go out later regarding the specific date for parents to view the Exhibition).

  • Tues. 13th June - Last day of school - full day. Dismissal at 3.30

Students have an essay to write, actions to coordinate, posters and art installations to create. Students will also be expected to continue primary and secondary research in support of the work they are doing.

PYP 8 News

Week of 3rd April, 2017

Dear Parents,

The exhibition is fast approaching. It has been calculated that there are only 11 more days in class to complete the exhibition. This is not including weekends, the holiday and April 4th, being Student Led Conference day.

The students are in the middle of completing their actions, working on formal presentations, display boards and then thinking about how they are going to express their project in an artistic way. The pace is picking up and the amount of work as well. If students have been keeping on top of their work, they should have no trouble completing this project on time.

Students have also been splitting their time in class with thinking about what they will present to their parents on the Student Led Conference day. As with the exhibition, it is a conference where they are completely in charge - they will come in, show their parents what they have been doing without any interference from the teacher.

Students will show their parents work from the exhibition, their developing note-taking skills, math, Portuguese and the work they have been doing on their portfolios. We hope that it is a rewarding day for the students and an enlightening day for the parents!

Upcoming things to remember….

  • April 4th: Student Led Conferences.
  • April 13th - half day for students (no lunch provided)
  • April 14th to 21st - No School. Half term break.

Dear Parents,

The students are in full exhibition mode. With the school play taking the time and energy of almost half of our PYP 8 students, we have all had a good opportunity to think about how to live the Learner Profile attribute of being balanced as students learned what it takes to keep up with all their commitments. The PYP8 teachers have been amazed at how resilient all the drama kids have been! Most have been keeping on top of their work and have still been active members of their exhibition groups. The students in Bugsy Malone did a fantastic job and should be commended on keeping it all together with the requirements of the play and their school work. The play was fantastic and the hard work of both students and teachers was extremely evident.!

At this point in the exhibition, we are moving into a phase where we can see an end in sight. The most important thing for the students now is the action. All the research they have done should be leading them to an issue that matters. Our students must engage in an action where they are making a difference in the community. Having completed action plans, they are now ready to go out into the wider community to make a change.

At the same time as managing the action for the exhibition, students will be completing their essay, creating a formal presentation, a board display and an art piece that represents their thoughts and feelings regarding their issue - so, lots to do.

We will all enjoy our holiday starting as a half day on April 13th.

PYP 8 News

Week of 13th March 2017

Dear Parents,

Book week was a success. Students had the opportunity to read with younger students, purchase books and participate in different activities that ranged from Readers Theater to creating their own stories…

I hope many of you enjoyed International Day, set up by the high schools to celebrate the diverse community of St. Francis. There were treats and performances from all over the world. Many PYP 8 students and parents were spotted either helping out at booths or participating as a spectator. It is wonderful that we can support the entire community!

The business of PYP 8 is not going to stop. We have officially started the exhibition Unit - which means the Exhibition is now 6 weeks away! (well, school weeks, at least - not counting holidays).

As students have done the bulk of their research and are now consolidating that information into a research paper - of course students will still do research to continue to add to the essay on an ongoing basis. The main thing we are going to focus on is primary research including collecting data using surveys, interviews and trips.

The most exciting and pivotal part of the exhibition is the Action - meaning students use their research to identify a problem and decide how they can have an impact on their community. We are asking parents to be supportive of their student as action will most likely require students to go someplace, and perhaps might have some cost involved.

Talk to your child about what their action is - make sure all trips and action plans are approved of by the classroom teacher or exhibition teacher so we can keep track of who is going where and who is doing what.

I look forward to seeing you all during the exhibition week to celebrate the learning our students have done. Look forward to receiving an official invitation somewhere closer to the week of May 1st - May 5th!

PYP 8 News

Week of 6th March 2017

Dear Parents,

Hope you all had an enjoyable break and Carnival.

This week is the last week of Unit 4 and children are putting together a visual presentation and written piece to show their understanding of the central idea that past civilisations impact upon today’s society.

In Maths this week we will work in our own classes on conversion between measurements.  The following two weeks we will be focused on data entry and analysis using pie charts and line graphs.  This will be done in Exhibition groups so as children can apply this to their exhibition where appropriate.

After this week, PYP 8 go into top gear as we start our Exhibition unit proper on the 13th March.  Please continue to support your children and communicate with teachers any ideas/trips before going ahead and planning these.  Raise any questions, doubts or issues you or your child have asap with class teachers and they will resolve in school.  Please remember the dates for the final presentation.

Week of 20th February 2017

Dear Parents,

We had a busy week last week with the theatre trip, bake sale and photographs.  This week is back to a normal timetable though please remember that Friday the children finish at 12:10.

Thank you for all your support and assistance with the Bake Sale items last week.  The event was a great success!

Our work in Class…

In our unit of inquiry, children continue to look at civilisations and elements within these to show how causes and changes led to our present civilisation.  The children will continue to work on this, this week, and the week after they return from the Carnival break.

Exhibition groups continue to narrow down their research and their hard work is beginning to identify issues within their particular area.  When we return after the break they will begin the next stage of final sorting out their findings.  These will then be used to create a written piece of work.  The 2nd week after returning from Carnival marks the start of Unit 5 which is the Exhibition proper.

Things to remember this week….

  1. Friday is Carnival dress up day - no football shirts
  2. Friday we finish at lunchtime and children return on Monday 6th March.

This will be our last blog until after carnival - The next blog post will be 6th March.
