PYP 8 News
Week of 26th September 2016
Dear Parents,
I´m sure you´ve all been excited to spend time with your child over the weekend after having them away for three days at Peraltas. Hopefully you have had the chance to catch up with them and listened to all the exciting activities participated in.
This year at Peraltas there was a focus on the Olympics and Para-Olympic games as a nod to the fact that Brazil recently hosted both events in Rio. Most interesting was having the students participate in the Para-Olympic activities as they were able to gain empathy towards the athletes and the unique challenges they have to overcome to participate in the games.
The two Para-Olympic events were sitting down volleyball, where they students were not allowed to use their legs and Go Ball where the students wore blinders so they could not see the ball. We had special balls that made a rattle sound so the students had to listen to participate in the game.
On Thursday afternoon at Peraltas we arranged students into their Exhibition groups to participate in a rotation of team-building activities. These ranged from Cross the Crocodile River to Ro Sham Bo Rockstar. Each of the activities were fun, designed for team-building and designed with a built-in reflection at the end. In their exhibition groups they had to write quick reflections on the lessons learned and how they would start to think about working together with their exhibition groups.
And of course at the end of Peraltas there was the Adventure race, where students mixed up their grades and raced around Peraltas in a variety of activities that got them wet, muddy, hot and sweaty. In the end there was a great buzz, emotions were high and excitement peaked as the winning team was announced at the closing ceremony before getting on the bus.
Many of the PYP 8s were sad about this being their last Peraltas. Of course there are many new and interesting trips to look forward to in MYP, DP and beyond.
