PYP 8 News

Week of 26th September 2016

Dear Parents,

I´m sure you´ve all been excited to spend time with your child over the weekend after having them away for three days at Peraltas. Hopefully you have had the chance to catch up with them and listened to all the exciting activities participated in.

This year at Peraltas there was a focus on the Olympics and Para-Olympic games as a nod to the fact that Brazil recently hosted both events in Rio. Most interesting was having the students participate in the Para-Olympic activities as they were able to gain empathy towards the athletes and the unique challenges they have to overcome to participate in the games.

The two Para-Olympic events were sitting down volleyball, where they students were not allowed to use their legs and Go Ball where the students wore blinders so they could not see the ball. We had special balls that made a rattle sound so the students had to listen to participate in the game.

On Thursday afternoon at Peraltas we arranged students into their Exhibition groups to participate in a rotation of team-building activities. These ranged from Cross the Crocodile River to Ro Sham Bo Rockstar. Each of the activities were fun, designed for team-building and designed with a built-in reflection at the end. In their exhibition groups they had to write quick reflections on the lessons learned and how they would start to think about working together with their exhibition groups.

And of course at the end of Peraltas there was the Adventure race, where students mixed up their grades and raced around Peraltas in a variety of activities that got them wet, muddy, hot and sweaty. In the end there was a great buzz, emotions were high and excitement peaked as the winning team was announced at the closing ceremony before getting on the bus.

Many of the PYP 8s were sad about this being their last Peraltas. Of course there are many new and interesting trips to look forward to in MYP, DP and beyond.

Week of 18th September 2016

Dear Parents,

Just a short blog this week as we are off to Peraltas.  Last week and today we are looking specifically at Exhibition and passions.  The year group has been working hard over the last six weeks to identify their passions, share their passions and now we have created 13 PYP8 shared passions.  These 13 passions also have connected passions within them - ask your children to show them to you.  Your children are now choosing and justifying the 3 passions that they feel most connected to.

Our work in Class…

Here are some photos of our displays that capture some of the work we have been doing in the build up of passions over the last few weeks.

Things to remember this week….

Peraltas - Arrive at Pinheiros by 6.20am

Children have a list of things they should bring.  We would just like to point out things they have been asked NOT to bring just in case they forget!!!
  1. No electronic equipment (including phones)
  2. No money
  3. No smelly snacks for the bus such as chitos……

Please remember
to send any medication separately so the nurse can take care of this.

Please remember
that they need a rucksack for the bus with luggage tag.  Also, one small suitcase/bag with luggage tag on.  Each child will be responsible for carrying their own luggage so please support them to be independent in doing this.

Week of 12th September 2016

Dear Parents,

We are coming towards the end of our first unit of inquiry.  Next week children will apply their understanding through promise sheets and thinking about a future job/role that they would like to do.

We ask you to continue working with your children on the following areas.
  1. A home schedule so children know exactly what they have to do each day both as a family and for school.
  2. Reading journals need to have four entries each work and should be included within the 20 minutes daily reading.  These journals are for children to reflect on their reading and only need to be 5 minute activities.  By thinking about what they have read, they will continue to build on their reading skills as they branch out as responsible free readers!
  3. Look at Google Classroom with your child and ask them to show you the different assignments, announcements etc., that they have been using.
  4. Ask your child to show you their google drive and the work they have doing here.  Is it organised???

Our work in Class…

Exhibition on Friday afternoon…..
Working as a whole year group to share passions and decide how many different Global Issues the passions link to.
Firstly we looked at passions (individually and as a class) and investigated many Global Issues.  We listed these on A4 sheets.  These sheets were taken to the covered court where we worked as a year group, sharing passions and issues.
We came back to class and reflected on how we had worked.  Ask your child to show you their work in their Passion Journals on Google Drive!

Things to remember this week….

  1. Saturday 17th is Primary Play rehearsal from 9am-12:30pm.

Week of 5th September 2016

Dear Parents,

A short Blog update this week.  Thanks for attending the parent/student meetings last week which were a great opportunity for all of us to move forward together in a positive direction.  The Targets that were created are invested in by the children and the discussions we had at the meeting reinforce this, making this process even more me meaningful.

Our work in Class…

We move into the final two weeks of our first Unit and will be looking to sort out the information we have researched and go further with this to really understand that “As individuals we play a role in society”.

Children in PYP 8 continue to work on a few lessons every week regards Exhibition which will build-up the skills they need for Unit 5 (the Exhibition unit). These lessons are also for children to find the things that they are truly passionate about.

Things to remember this week….

  • Wednesday 7th September- Brazilian Independence day- No School
