Dear Parents,
We had a busy week last week with the theatre trip, bake sale and photographs. This week is back to a normal timetable though please remember that Friday the children finish at 12:10.
Thank you for all your support and assistance with the Bake Sale items last week. The event was a great success!

Our work in Class…
In our unit of inquiry, children continue to look at civilisations and elements within these to show how causes and changes led to our present civilisation. The children will continue to work on this, this week, and the week after they return from the Carnival break.
Exhibition groups continue to narrow down their research and their hard work is beginning to identify issues within their particular area. When we return after the break they will begin the next stage of final sorting out their findings. These will then be used to create a written piece of work. The 2nd week after returning from Carnival marks the start of Unit 5 which is the Exhibition proper.

Things to remember this week….

Week of 13th February 2017
Dear Parents,
In our Unit of Inquiry, we continued to find out about the Sumerian Civilisation in groups. Looking at its elements, how they developed visually displayed through timelines. We are moving into understanding the importance of the geography and how geographical elements affect and drive the elements of civilisation. We continue to show connection of the civilisation to present day.
Exhibition groups worked hard to move from more general research to more focused research. There is a lot of hard work coming over the next few months so please support your children and motivate them at home to fully immerse with their inquiry.

Our work in ClassSharing understanding in Maths to build new concepts with converting between percentages, fractions and decimals. |
Finding out and connecting geographical elements that may affect the growth of a civilisation.Groups produced their first visual ideas to show the elements of a civilisation using a timeline, geography and fonts for titles. The class then critiqued the piece to see how it could show deeper knowledge and understanding. |

Your maths teacher will show how to use the website on Tuesday during Maths and you will set
your own homework to challenge yourself. Your teacher will give you a piece of graph paper where you will write the question and show your working out. You will then mark the answers afterwards. This is also a trust exercise as you have access to the answers - so what is more important is showing your working out! http://www.helpingwithmath.com/printables/worksheets/WorksheetGenerator02.htm The website will be shared on Google Classroom by Mr. Benzie on Tuesday.

Week of 6th February 2017
Dear Parents,
We have begun to find out about what it means to be a civilisation through various elements. Our reading last week helped us to see these elements through the eyes of the Sumerian Civilisation which led into shared writing on each element.
We continue to focus our writing on structured paragraphs with a main point and evidence in each of these paragraphs to then build an explanation/opinion. This work will be used again and again within our non-fiction writing.

Friday Tribes
We finished Friday with a fun, team building activity scavenger hunt. Children worked in their exhibition groups to go around the school, linked arms within their group and hunt for various objects. They had to take a picture and then show this picture to a PYP 8 adult, whilst trying to collect each adult’s signature before visiting that adult again.
The children and adults really enjoyed this and the reflections afterwards focused on strategies used and how working as a team in such activities can be taken back into the classroom for group work……..e.g. making simple decisions quickly by turn-taking, having someone lead the group or agree with others ideas and later share your idea for which object to hunt next.
PYP 8 adults have already decided to build on this activity next week (if it doesn’t rain) with a secret twist to the rules that children will only discover once the activity starts.
